Road Legal Number Plates UK – A Complete Guide

Choosing the right number plates for your vehicle is about more than just appearance. UK road legal number plates must meet specific regulations to ensure they remain clearly visible, easily readable, and compliant with current legislation.

At Driven Digits, we manufacture road legal number plates that combine durability, quality, and style while meeting the latest UK standards.

What Are Road Legal Number Plates?

Road legal number plates are registration plates that comply with all current UK requirements for use on public roads.

They must:

• Display the correct registration number
• Use the approved Charles Wright font
• Meet legal character sizing and spacing requirements
• Be manufactured to BS AU 145e standards
• Display the supplier’s details
• Display the relevant British Standard marking

Failure to meet these requirements can result in MOT failures, fines, or requests to replace the plates.

What Is BS AU 145e?

BS AU 145e is the current British Standard for vehicle number plates.

Introduced to improve durability, visibility, and safety, the standard ensures plates can withstand:

• Impact damage
• Weather exposure
• UV fading
• General road use

All road legal number plates supplied by Driven Digits are manufactured to BS AU 145e requirements.

Are 3D Number Plates Road Legal?

Yes.

3D gel number plates can be fully road legal when manufactured correctly.

The characters must:

• Use the approved font
• Meet legal dimensions
• Be black in colour
• Maintain the correct spacing

3D gel plates remain one of the most popular upgrades for drivers looking to improve the appearance of their vehicle while remaining fully compliant.

Are 4D Number Plates Road Legal?

Yes.

4D number plates can also be road legal when produced to the correct specification.

Raised acrylic characters offer a sharper and more modern appearance while maintaining compliance with UK regulations.

Many drivers choose 4D plates as a stylish alternative to traditional printed plates.

Why Choose Road Legal 3D or 4D Plates?

Road legal 3D and 4D number plates offer:

• Enhanced appearance
• Improved depth and definition
• Modern styling
• Compliance with UK regulations
• Long-lasting durability

They provide a simple way to personalise your vehicle while remaining suitable for everyday road use.

Common Reasons Drivers Replace Their Number Plates

Many motorists order new road legal number plates because their existing plates are:

• Cracked
• Faded
• Delaminating
• Damaged
• Stolen
• Failing MOT inspections

Replacing worn plates helps keep your vehicle looking presentable and compliant with current regulations.

What Documents Do You Need?

By law, registered number plate suppliers must verify both your identity and entitlement to the registration before producing road legal plates.

Proof of Identity

Accepted documents may include:

• Driving licence
• Passport
• National identity card

Proof of Entitlement

Accepted documents may include:

• V5C logbook
• V750 Certificate of Entitlement
• V778 Retention Document
• New keeper supplement
• Vehicle tax reminder

These checks help prevent vehicle identity fraud and ensure plates are issued correctly.

How Long Do Road Legal Number Plates Last?

The lifespan of a number plate depends on the materials used and environmental exposure.

High-quality road legal plates can remain in excellent condition for many years when properly manufactured and maintained.

Factors affecting lifespan include:

• UV exposure
• Road salt
• Cleaning products
• Weather conditions
