Number Plate Legality & Compliance (UK)

At Driven Digits, we take number plate legality seriously. All road legal number plates we manufacture are produced in full compliance with UK regulations, ensuring they are safe, readable, and lawful for use on public roads.

This page explains everything you need to know about legal number plates, show plates, and the requirements you must meet before we can supply road legal plates.

Are Your Number Plates Road Legal?

Yes — when ordered as road legal plates and supplied with the correct documents, our number plates fully comply with UK law.

All road legal plates are manufactured in line with:

  • UK number plate regulations
  • British Standard BS AU 145e
  • Requirements set by the DVLA

This includes correct:

  • Character size and spacing
  • Font style
  • Reflective materials
  • Supplier markings

Road Legal Plates vs Show Plates

🚗 Road Legal Number Plates

These are legal for use on public roads when fitted correctly and used as intended.

Road legal plates must:

  • Meet BS AU 145e standards
  • Display the supplier name and postcode
  • Display the British Standard marking
  • Be clearly readable by the human eye and ANPR systems

🏁 Show Plates

Show plates are not legal for road use.

They are intended for:

  • Car shows
  • Track use
  • Photography
  • Private land

Show plates may:

  • Use altered spacing or sizing
  • Include tinted backgrounds
  • Be customised beyond legal limits

⚠️ Using show plates on public roads may result in fines, MOT failure, or penalties.

Documents Required for Road Legal Plates

By law, we must verify your entitlement before supplying road legal plates.

You must provide:

1️⃣ Proof of Identity

One of the following:

  • Driving licence
  • Passport

2️⃣ Proof of Vehicle Entitlement

One of the following:

  • V5C logbook
  • V750 certificate of entitlement
  • V778 retention document

❗ Without valid documents, only show plates can be supplied.

Are 3D, 4D & 5D Plates Legal?

Yes — 3D, 4D, and 5D plates can be road legal, provided they meet UK regulations.

For a plate to remain legal:

  • Characters must use the approved Charles Wright 2001 font
  • Spacing must be correct
  • Characters must not be stylised or altered
  • Number plates must remain fully readable

At Driven Digits, we ensure all road legal 3D, 4D, and 5D plates are produced within these rules.

Tinted Number Plates & MOTs

Tinted plates are not road legal in the UK.

They:

  • Reduce reflectivity
  • Affect readability
  • May fail an MOT
  • Can attract police attention

Tinted plates are supplied strictly as show plates only.

ANPR Cameras & Number Plates

There is no legal number plate that is designed to avoid or defeat ANPR cameras.

Any plate advertised as “ANPR proof” or “camera dodging” is illegal.

Our road legal plates:

  • Are fully ANPR-readable
  • Comply with enforcement standards
  • Are safe and lawful for road use

Supplier Markings & Compliance

All road legal plates supplied by Driven Digits include:

  • Supplier name
  • Supplier postcode
  • British Standard marking

These markings are a legal requirement and must not be removed, altered, or obscured.

Our Commitment to Compliance

As a responsible UK plate supplier, Driven Digits:

  • Follows all DVLA regulations
  • Uses compliant reflective materials
  • Ensures precise spacing and sizing
  • Refuses to supply illegal road plates
