Required Documents for Road Legal Plates

To comply with UK law, we must verify your identity and entitlement to the registration before manufacturing road legal number plates.

• Driving licence, with or without a photo
• Utility bill, Council Tax bill or Northern Ireland rates bill from the last 6 months

• V5C vehicle registration certificate
• New keeper slip
• V750 certificate of entitlement
• V778 retention document
• V11 vehicle tax or SORN reminder
• V379 temporary registration certificate
• V948 or electronic eV948 authorisation
• Other qualifying fleet, leasing, insurance or trailer documentation

Both documents must be valid and clearly visible.

Upgrade your vehicle with premium Obsidian Number Plates, also commonly known as Staggered Number Plates. Designed and manufactured in the UK by Driven Digits, our Obsidian plates use a distinctive dual-layer 4D character design to create exceptional depth and an aggressive, premium finish.

Unlike standard 4D number plates that use a single raised acrylic character, Obsidian staggered plates combine two precision-cut layers. A full-size 3mm gloss black 4D character forms the base, with a smaller black inner character positioned on top.

The staggered sizing of the two layers exposes the outer edge of the lower character, creating the distinctive stepped appearance that gives Staggered Number Plates their name.

Choose between a matte black or gloss black inner layer to customise the final appearance.

What Are Staggered Number Plates?

Staggered Number Plates are a premium style of raised number plate that uses differently sized layers to create additional depth within each registration character.

Rather than stacking two identically sized characters directly on top of each other, the upper character is deliberately smaller. This leaves part of the lower layer visible around its edge and creates a distinctive staggered, multi-level effect.

Our Obsidian design uses an all-black combination to produce a sharp, sophisticated appearance while retaining the recognisable registration character.

This layered construction is why Obsidian Number Plates are also commonly referred to as Staggered Plates or Staggered 4D Number Plates.

Premium Obsidian Number Plates

Obsidian Plates take the traditional raised appearance of 4D Number Plates and add another dimension.

Each registration character consists of:

3mm Gloss Black 4D Base Layer
The larger lower character creates the main raised profile and visible outer border.

Smaller Black Inner Layer
A second, smaller character sits on top of the base to produce the staggered effect.

Every character is precision-cut and carefully assembled to create clean edges and consistent positioning across the registration.

Obsidian vs Standard 4D Number Plates

The main difference between Obsidian Plates and standard 4D Number Plates is the construction of the characters.

Standard 4D plates typically use a single layer of raised black acrylic.

Obsidian Number Plates use two differently sized layers. The smaller upper character exposes part of the larger 4D base underneath, producing the staggered appearance.

If you like 4D Number Plates but want considerably more character depth and detail, Obsidian offers a more distinctive alternative.

Obsidian vs Ghost Number Plates

Both Obsidian and Ghost plates offer a more detailed alternative to conventional raised number plates, but their character construction and overall appearance are different.

Obsidian Number Plates use the distinctive dual-layer staggered construction, with a smaller black character positioned over a larger black 4D base.

Ghost Number Plates use their own layered border design to enhance the definition and depth of the registration.

Both provide a premium raised finish, but Obsidian is the choice for customers specifically looking for the staggered number plate style.

Obsidian & Staggered Number Plates FAQs

What are Obsidian Number Plates?

Obsidian Number Plates are premium raised number plates featuring a dual-layer black acrylic character construction. A smaller upper character is positioned over a larger 4D base, creating additional depth and a distinctive stepped appearance.

What are Staggered Number Plates?

Staggered Number Plates use differently sized layers within each registration character. The smaller upper layer allows the larger base layer to remain visible around the edge, producing the staggered effect.

Are Obsidian Plates the same as Staggered Number Plates?

Obsidian is Driven Digits’ version of the style commonly known as Staggered Number Plates. Our design combines a 3mm gloss black 4D base with a smaller matte or gloss black inner character.

Are Staggered Number Plates road legal?

Layered number plates aren’t automatically legal simply because of their construction. Road-use plates must meet the applicable UK requirements for matters such as character appearance, spacing, reflective material, markings and visibility. Our road legal Obsidian configuration is manufactured to the required specification.

Are Obsidian Number Plates MOT compliant?

Our road legal Obsidian Number Plates are manufactured to the applicable UK number plate requirements and are intended for normal road use and MOT testing when correctly specified and fitted.

What’s the difference between Staggered and 4D Number Plates?

Standard 4D plates generally feature a single raised acrylic character. Staggered plates add a smaller second layer over the larger base character, producing a more pronounced multi-level appearance.

Can I order replacement Obsidian Number Plates?

Yes. You can order Obsidian plates as replacement plates for a registration you’re legally entitled to use. Proof of identity and entitlement will be required before your road legal plates can be produced.

Can I use a private registration on Obsidian Plates?

Yes, provided you have the appropriate documentation showing your entitlement to use the registration.
